DEMETER

DEMETER (Detection of Electro-Magnetic Emissions Transmitted from Earthquake Regions) is a micro-satellite developed by CNES in collaboration with French, European and Japanese laboratories. Demeter’s scientific payload is composed of several instruments that provide a nearly continuous survey of the plasma, waves and energetic particles around the Earth, via these experiments:

• The electric field experiment ICE measures the three components of the electric field.
• The search-coil magnetometer IMSC, measures the three components of the magnetic field.
• The Langmuir probe ISL gives access to the electron density and temperature.
• The thermal ion spectrometer IAP measures the ion density, composition and temperature and flow velocity.
• A solid-state energetic particle detector IDP measures high-energy electrons and protons by looking in a direction perpendicular to the orbit plane.
• In addition, there is an onboard neural network RNF to count the whistlers according to their dispersion.
