The main objectives of ADEOS-1 is to contribute to elucidation of phenomena of the earth system through integrated observation of geophysical parameters using a number of sensors. The main parameters observed by ADEOS-1 are :
- energy flux between atmosphere and ocean,
- three-dimensional distribution of atmospheric temperature and water vapor,
- aerosol distribution over ocean,
- three-dimensional distribution of atmospheric ozone,
- chlorophyll distribution in ocean,
- sea surface temperature,
- ocean wind vector,
- vegetation distribution.
In addition to the scientific purpose, the data acquired by ADEOS-1 can be used for practical applications such as weather forecasting, probing of fishing grounds, land cover surveying and elevation measurement.
While ADEOS-1 was the first satellite to observe the earth system in an integrated manner, long-term observation is required in order to fully understand changes of global environmental phenomena. Fortunately, years of observations were provided by PARASOL, which succeed to ADEOS-I and ADEOS-II, that have been lost after 7-8 months.
