CFOSAT, jointly developed by CNES and the China National Space Administration (CNSA), was launched on October 29, 2018, from the Jiuquan Space Center (China). CFOSAT addresses both operational needs for forecasting surface winds and waves, and research needs by improving our knowledge of wave hydrodynamics and the interactions between surface waves, the atmosphere, and the ocean. It carries two radar instruments: SWIM (Surface Waves Investigation and Monitoring), a scatterometer provided by CNES to measure wave properties (direction, height and wavelength), and SCAT (Wind SCATterometer), a scatterometer provided by CNSA to measure wind speed and direction at the air-sea interface.
