Launched on January 17, 2016, from Vandenberg Air Force Base (California, USA), Jason-3 is the result of a joint effort led by CNES, NASA, the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), continuing a legacy of ocean surface topography measurements that began in 1992 with the TOPEX/Poseidon mission.
Jason-3 is a continuation of Jason-1 and Jason-2, with a focus on climate applications. Provided by CNES, Poseidon-3B is the main instrument on Jason-3, with similar characteristics to the Poseidon-3 altimeter on Jason-2, including further improvements to the tracking mode algorithms.
