About Sentinel-6 mission
Sentinel-6 is a collaborative mission under the Copernicus program, implemented and co-funded by the European Commission, the European Space Agency (ESA), the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), and the United States through NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The mission consists of two identical satellites launched five years apart.
The first satellite, Sentinel-6 (A) Michael Freilich (MF), a radar altimeter, was launched on November 21, 2020, to continue the series of Jason satellites. The second satellite, Sentinel-6B, launched on November 17, 2025, becomes the new reference mission in radar altimetry, ensuring the continuity and enhancement of sea level rise measurements.
